Hoya hunting
Jan. 27th, 2020 10:47 amI need to get better about posting here. A lot has happened the last few days. It's cold and all the plants are inside again. Minion has learned to say Happy Gasparilla Day. I've been trying to teach him "Happy Gasparilla Day in Tampa Bay" but he only has the first part. We are at 149 words now. I'm hoping he'll learn "Spared no expense" but he hasn't gotten it yet. I don't know if he doesn't like that but he listens so maybe his budgie brain is recording it. I'm wondering if I should celebrate every 50 words as a mile stone or every 100? Every hundred is a big thing of course but I think I will make a video for the 150th word.
So I have been on the hunt for more hoyas. You guys know I got into hoyas years ago. Back in 2014 the be precise. Maybe earlier. I lost my H. cinnomomifolia which was my fave and it's been killing me. It is very hard to find though it might be the wrong time of year since it's still winter. Well going onto Ebay and from what I've seen on youtube Hoyas are now a craze. WTF? When did this happen? This is not cool and I hate it when I have a hobby that I'm into first and few people are into and then it becomes a stupid fad and goes mainstream. It bugs me all these people are now posting videos of hoyas and don't even know anything about them. They get them because they look cool and other friends have them. This has caused the price of all hoyas to go up and it's really dumb. Some that were $20 back six years ago are now twice or more. Hoya kerrii is popular for Valentine's day now because of the heart leaves and it has gotten stupidly expensive. Luckily I have had one for years that's gotten huge. It's to the point that it's almost cheaper to import them and get lots of them than buying them individually in the US. I'm thinking of doing an import this year. My first real one.
Anyway replacing H. cinnomomifolia has been hard. And it pisses me off, how many people even know what that is now? Sometimes I don't want to share stuff on videos or pics because I want to keep it to myself. There was one on ebay but it was an auction. I HATE auctions for plants. I almost always lose. And I did lose. But then something cool happened. Chris was on a job in St. Pete when he told me about a plant store he had passed by. Yesterday was a half day and he had another early call in St. Pete. He asked if I wanted to go and I said yes since we should be together and it would be like a whole day off that way. So we went and the customer was nice. I asked about the nursery and it was only one mile from the job. So Chris took me and I was amazed. This store was great they had everything. They had really nice pots, they had cactuses, they had some nepenthes (just ventratas of course) and lots of chemicals and supplies. There was an indoor room with gorgeous corinthain bell chimes. I have been wanting one of the giant ones with the low sounds for a long time. They are always expensive though. From $300 - 500 depending how big they are. Maybe someday I can get one. But when I went into the back room they had hoyas. And not just the boring common carnosa everyone has. Even back when I got into hoyas carnosa and variants or carnosa were so common. You guys know I don't do common, though I will be getting a few varigated carnosas just as an investment. Maybe I can take advantage of the fad. But they had my cinnomomifolia. Just one. It's as though the plant was waiting for me and it was less than the auction ended at. I was thrilled. But they also had H. gold star. A story on that in a bit. And H. kerrii splash. I got all those as well as Dischidia ovata which looks like watermelon leaves. And Chris also got me a cute tiny fuzzy cactus. I think it's an old man cactus. So adorable. I couldn't believe they had so many from my wishlist. If I had had the money I could easily come out with a small truck load of plants and supplies from that place. I'll definitely be going back for more.
After that we ate at Steak N Shake. Chris went looking for a game and I'm glad we were able to find it so we had a successful day. After we got home Chris worked in the garage and finally got those nasty metal shelves taken apart. I was thrilled he surprised me with that. He rocks. We can now sell that at the scrap yard. I hope I get something for it. Now I can clean out that side of the garage and get more of those awesome plastic shelves. The garage is really starting to clean up now. So it was a great day.
Today I have a lot to do so I need to stay home and be busy. I'm cutting and rooting my old hoya kerrii. It's gotten huge and too big. I need to figure out how I want to pot it. Actually I need to decide how to pot all my hoyas. If I want them in pots on the ground with trellises or in hanging baskets. Hanging baskets are harder to work with in winter to bring in but look awesome. I don't know. I watch two guys on youtube. They both grow in different ways but I need to figure something out. I NEED to force myself to work on my bullet journal. I need to finish it this week no matter what. And I have lots of plant chores so yeah lots to do.
